Dear Jeremy Hunt, 
After the Autumn Statement announcement, I am writing to you to urge you to do more to help households that are struggling right now. 
At a time when millions of people are already struggling financially because of the rising cost of living, a compassionate approach to helping the most vulnerable could not be needed more. The cost of living is still rising, energy and food prices remain high this winter and unaffordable for many low income households. As a compassionate and just society, we need to make sure we are caring for those on the lowest incomes and not driving people into destitution. 
What’s more, it is not just a financial struggle many households are facing, but also an emotional struggle. Recent<a href="https://capuk.org/polling"> YouGov polling conducted by Christians Against Poverty (CAP)</a> found that 10% of UK adults agree with the statement ‘At times I have felt the increased cost of living has made my life not worth living’. This alarming sentiment highlights the profound impact of the rising cost of living on an individual’s mental well-being and the multifaceted challenges many households are grappling with in today's economic climate. 
I join with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) in calling for the UK Government to urgently review the rates of social security so all households have adequate living standards. I am pleased to see that social security levels will be uprated in line with inflation, but this decision is the barest minimum that any Government should do, as this only restores social security to the real value it had on the eve of the pandemic. 
Across our country, millions of people are living in poverty, without access to an adequate standard of living. People like CAP client Liam (Names have been changed to protect his identity) who was moved into social housing aged 18, with no furniture or carpets – all he had was a suitcase of clothes. Liam had no money going spare, he told CAP he would regularly eat a tin of cold baked beans because he couldn’t afford to heat them up and would do his laundry in the bath. More needs to be done to help people like Liam. 
I urge you to do more. As the 6th largest economy in the world, we can surely afford to - and I stand with Liam in saying that we can't afford not to.
